All fire safety products are, obviously, primarily designed to fight the spread of flames – some directly, some indirectly. Mostly they’re all divided into two categories: active and passive. Active fire systems include fire alarms, fire extinguishers and sprinklers; that sort of thing. Passive systems, on the other hand, include our fire doors. Rather than extinguish the flames, fire doors have a dual role – to slow the spread of the flames by acting as a barrier to other rooms, and also to provide a means of escape if necessary for any people still in the building.
These dual roles are reflected in its design, which has to be sturdy enough to stop the fire but otherwise easy to use under everyday circumstances. Many of our internal fire doors here at Savoy Timber fit into the most common category, FD30, which indicates that they can reliably resist fire for at least thirty minutes.
